Despite claims of improvements to fuel economy and performance of the engine by various additive manufacturers, motorists, in general, still hold a conservative approach when it comes to these aftermarket products.
   
This comes naturally, as cars are prized assets on our shores and owners tend to be more careful in choosing aftermarket products for their cars.

Many motorists also prefer to leave the 'dirty jobs' of maintenance to the expertise of workshops and pay for their services instead. Some are also worried of the 'side effects' of what these performance enhancers can bring to their cars.

Types of petrol additives 

Petrol additives are additional 'ingredients', which can supplement and help the combustion process. Additives boast a wide range of desirable traits, such as enhancing the combustion process, cleaning up the combustion chamber and help maintain a more efficient operation of the engine.

With a wide variety of petrol additives in the market, even the most discerning motorists may be confused. Many additives in the market work by increasing the octane rating of the fuel, which in turn help to improve the performance of the petrol engine - albeit by a small amount.

Others prevent corrosion to engine components, or by increasing the lubricity of the fuel, which in turn reduces friction and helps improve efficiency in diesel engines.

Some additives also work by incorporating metal compounds into the formula to boost combustion. Likewise, these additives may lead to an increase in engine performance, but such changes are temporal.

Combustion of metal-based additives is also prone to leaving residue, which is harmful to the environment.
