When Volkswagen introduced their 1.4-litre turbo-supercharged Golf GT, the expected take up was strong. After all, this was an engine. 1.4-litres in capacity with really great fuel economy and more torque below 2000rpm than a BMW 330i, Mercedes SL350 or a Porsche Cayman.
