Last year's Subaru Impreza WRX Challenge record, set by Singaporean, George Lee remained unbroken at 81 hours 32mins. In an exciting end to the endurance challenge, Singaporean Mr. Mohamed Anuar, 40 emerged the winner, after going neck-to-neck in a close fight with fellow contender, Mr. Santozkumar Poonsolai, In the early afternoon, the competition started to heat up once it was down to the last three contenders, which included Ms Yeo Shu Qing.
After a good fight, birthday girl, Yeo Shu Qing dropped out in the 75th hour, amidst cheers, balloons, birthday wishes and placards. Thai contender Mr. Samach Tepsen dropped out earlier in the day, after bagging the Asian Winner and Country Winner title. He was responsible for helping his country win the S$10,000 Country Team Winner title.
The final three contestants were given a well-deserved five-minute break at 4:00pm, where they could rest their feet, have a massage and cool down with a bottle of isotonic drink. One contestant, Mr. Santozkumar Poonsolai, remained glued to his palm decal during the break, although Marshalls signalled for him to take a quick rest at the break area. Like Yeo, he had received two warnings for violating the regulations, whilst Anuar received only one throughout the four days.
As the clock ticked on slowly, the stillness in the air spread to the atmosphere in the competition arena. Instead of talking, dancing and joking around, final contestants, Poonsolai and Anuar remained still and silent, focussing on gunning for the grand prize.
Anuar was announced the winner at around 6.45pm after the cameras detected that Poonsolai's palm had moved off his assigned decal.
"I am very happy and too emotional to say anything. I just want to be with my wife and family. I miss them so much. It's been very tough," said Anuar.
"I'd like to congratulate all contestants and special mention must go to Samach Tepsen from Thailand, who endured the Challenge to win the Asian title. The finalists, Anuar and Poonsolai really fought head to head right into the 77th hour. This is truly an amazing feat," said Ms. Hannah Tan, Regional Marketing Manager, Motor Image Group.
All winners will receive their well-deserved prizes at a prize-giving ceremony on Wednesday, 4 November 2009 at the Subaru Hub.
