The A6 Avant features the same bold, aggressive front look as its sedan brethren, while the rear design is endowed with a sporty, sloping roofline leading to an elegant rear end. Despite being larger than the outgoing model, the car weighs 70 kg less than its predecessor thanks to extensive use of aluminium for the car’s chassis as well as a lightweight body.
Audi has also given the interior of the A6 Avant a premium feel, with a wrap-around dashboard and driver-oriented controls. Among the convenience features available for the estate version of the A6 include a load-through hatch, a fixing set and a power rear hatch.
The hatch door can be opened using a gesture sensor, together with the key fob, similar to the system found on the Volkswagen Passat. Audi describes the system as such: “If the driver stands behind the car and makes a specific movement with his or her foot, two sensors open the hatch”
The boot itself has a standard luggage capacity of 565 litres, which is expandable to a massive 1,680 litres when the seats are folded down. Overall, the car has grown, with the new A6 Avant measuring in at 4930mm long, 1870mm wide and 1460mm high. Wheelbase has been extended by 70mm to measure in at 2910mm.
Five engines will be available at launch for the A6 Avant, with two petrol and three diesel variants. The petrol models include a 2.8-litre FSI V6 with 204bhp and 200Nm of torque, and a 3.0-litre TFSI V6 with 300bhp and 440Nm of torque. The diesel engines meanwhile include a 2.0-litre TDI with 177bhp and 380Nm of torque, a 3.0-litre TDI V6 with 204bhp and 400Nm of torque, and the same 3.0-litre TDI V6 unit with 245bhp and 500Nm of torque.
Transmission options include a six-speed manual, a seven-speed S-tronic, a CVT multi-tronic or an eight-speed Tiptronic transmission, depending on which engine is specified. All models are front-wheel-drive as standard, with Audi’s Quattro four-wheel-drive available as an option.
