In the second round of bidding in September, COE premiums ended mostly lower, with Cat A and B both recording a consistent dip since the last round, followed by a slight increase in Cat E premiums.
Premiums for Cat A, for cars up to 1,600cc in engine capacity and with an output of no more than 130bhp, fell by $2,209 (7.59%) and ended at $28,000.
Premiums for Cat B, larger cars with more than 130bhp or engine displacements larger than 1,600cc, dropped by $694 (2.19%) and ended at $31,307.
In Cat E, the open category, premiums went up by $199 (0.62%), with premiums closing at $32,000.
For the second time this year, we are seeing sub-$30,000 COE premiums for Cat A. Car buyers may be encouraged to purchase a new car now, which may lead to an increase in COE premiums in the next round. An example would be like the $25,000 Cat A COE recorded in July, where an increase of bids caused a rebound of COE premiums. This may also encourage those who want to renew their COEs to do so, as prevailing quota premiums have stabilised from the consistent drop in COE premiums.
