Mercedes-Benz is taking the next step in using vehicle data to save lives. In London, the German automaker is exploring how data from vehicles, starting with information from its driver assistance systems, could make the streets safer for everyone.
Together with Transport for London and the Urban Mobility Solutions division at Mercedes-Benz AG, the Mercedes-Benz Road Safety Dashboard has been developed. This digital tool has the potential to identify higher risk locations prior to an incident taking place, allowing for timely mitigation and intervention.
The Road Safety Dashboard is based on alerts from driver assistance systems, which are offered in almost all Mercedes-Benz models now. The systems can intervene in dangerous traffic situations, reducing the severity of potential collisions or even avoid them altogether.
The data from the driver assistance systems are enriched with additional data from its surroundings. These include existing traffic infrastructure such as traffic lights or junction information, as well as pedestrian density.
Mercedes-Benz's Urban Mobility Solutions will integrate further features into the Road Safety Dashboard, such as measuring traffic volume or warning of slippery roads. Following the successful deployment in London, corresponding projects are underway in several large and medium-sized cities worldwide.
