An engineer who beat the red light, crashed and killed a motorcyclist has been sentenced to jail and banned from driving.

A 32-year old Structural Engineer who ran the red light and crashed into a motorcyclist, killing him and injuring his pillion rider, was jailed for four and a half months on Friday. He was also banned from driving all types of vehicles for seven years.

Bian Yang admitted to causing the death of 21-year old Malaysian, Aravinthan Ganesan, by dangerous driving. The accident took place at the junction of Mandai Road, where the motorcyclist was turning right into Bukit Timah Expressway (BKE) on 24th August last year.

The court heard that Bian was trying to cross the junction before the amber light turns red, but he missed and hit Mr Aravinthan who had the right of way.

The motorcyclist was flung onto the left kerb, and his cousin, 23-year old Sasikala Krishna Murthi, was thrown off the bike onto the road.

Bian stopped to render help. When the paramedics arrived, Mr Aravinthan was pronounced dead on the scene.

In his defence, Bian's lawyer said the 32-year old father of one suffered from depression after the accident and felt remorseful. Bian could have been jailed for up to five years.
