The Straits Times reported that official discussions to build a high-speed railway between Kuala Lumpur and Singapore began this month, with the first meeting identifying matters for joint deliberations. In a joint statement yesterday, the two countries said the High-Speed Rail Work Group has made good progress since it was formed last month.
This was part of the 10th working meeting of the Malaysia-Singapore Joint Ministerial Committee for Iskandar Malaysia, which was held in Singapore. It was co-chaired by Dato Seri Abdul Wahid Omar, Malaysia's Minister in the Prime Minister's Department, and Mr. Khaw Boon Wan, Singapore's National Development Minister. Senior officials of both countries were also present.
The statement also said a work group on the Rapid Transit Link between Singapore and Johor Bahru has agreed to 'work towards a preferred and agreed option by the end of 2014'. It has also increased the quota for cross-border bus services from 16 to 20, and is reviewing new landing points in both countries to improve the bus network. Progress was also made by other work groups on tourism, industry and environmental management.
