Priority queues will be implemented at all MRT stations, at platform screen doors and passenger lifts, soon. This will allow commuters, such as wheelchair users, pregnant women, the elderly and parents with strollers to board the train or enter the lifts first, The Straits Times reported.
Announcing this on Thursday, the 31st of March in a press release, the Land Transport Authority (LTA) said the priority queues will be implemented at four stations and an interchange first and feedback will be gathered from commuters over two months.
They are, Novena (North-South Line), Outram Park (East-West Line and North-East Line), Chinatown (North-East Line), Sengkang (North- East Line) and Kent Ridge (Circle Line) and they were chosen for their nearness to hospitals and high usage by seniors.
Based on the feedback garnered, the LTA may modify the design of the priority queue before calling a tender to roll out the scheme across the MRT and LRT network. The location of the priority queues in front of the platform screen doors will correspond with the wheelchair spaces allocated in the train cars. They will also be closer to the lifts and away from the escalators where passenger traffic is heaviest.
