In yet another case of checkpoint security breach, a 33-year old Malaysian man had attempted to drive out of the Woodlands Checkpoint at about 10:45am yesterday after he was directed for further checks - as he was unable to produce his travel document at the arrival car counter.
However he was arrested by officers from the Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA) for failing to stop for immigration clearance, after ICA activated an alarm and locking down the arrival car zone immediately, reported The Straits Times.
An ICA spokesman cited, the car was stopped within the checkpoint and the driver was placed under immediate arrest. The incident - the fourth such case this year - is currently under investigation.
In a more recent case, another Malaysian tried to tailgate a car at the Woodlands Checkpoint to enter Singapore on Sunday last week - but was arrested after the area was locked down.
Deputy Prime Minister, Teo Chee Hean, updated Parliament last Monday on enhanced security measures introduced at the checkpoint, including closer coordination with police and the deployment of mobile crash barriers. He also added there are plans to use tracking vehicles to deter cars from escaping if they manage to get past the barriers.
