  • Mazda Minagi concept hints at future Mazda compact SUV

Mazda has unveiled its Minagi concept car at the Geneva Motor Show, which hints at a future crossover compact SUV for Mazda's range

The Minagi features Mazda's new Kodo design strategy, which was first seen on the Shinari concept car. Unlike the Shinari, which was a swoopy sports car concept, the Minagi previews a future production compact SUV model to rival the likes of the Volkswagen Tiguan.

"I wanted to convey something different from the Mazda SHINARI. I felt a compact crossover SUV was the perfect vehicle to express agility and focused movement the flexibility of four limbs moving in unison, and an upright posture," said Masashi Nakayama, the designer of the crossover concept.

The Minagi concept has some similar design features as the Shinari, such as the front grille and the chrome"signature wing" that extends all the way through the headlights to give the car a sharp and aggressive look. The Kodo design language gives the Minagi a sculpted form with the contours of the front and rear fenders emphasising the wheels.

Overall, the Minagi has a sleek and dynamic profile, giving it a powerful and muscular look, and the headlights and taillights feature a similar shape which Mazda compares to a "wild animal's gaze", and gives the car a high-tech appearance.

The interior of the Minagi concept has a driver-oriented cockpit with four upright satin chrome struts to support the dashboard. The instrument panel features sporty touches such as the round chronograph-like clocks and the three-spoke steering wheel.

Mazda has not revealed any technical details about the Minagi, except that it will feature Mazda's Skyactiv series of next-generation of powertrain and chassis technologies. The Minagi could also be jointly-developed with Mazda's partner Ford, who previewed its own compact SUV with the Vertrek concept at the Detroit Motor Show.
