The 'Green Man Plus' scheme is designed to allow more time for elderly and disabled pedestrians to cross the road, and will now spread to more housing estates such as Bishan and Jurong.
The Land Transport Authority (LTA) has announced that the scheme will be expanded, with 239 new pedestrian crossings adopting the system. The second phase is expected to begin late this year and complete by 2015.
The new implementation will now cover 495 crossings in 30 housing estates, up from the current 256 in 15 areas.
Speaking to The Straits Times, LTA Group Director for road operations and community partnership, Dr Chin Kian Keong, said, "We have received positive feedback and suggestions since the implementations of Green Man Plus."
An LTA spokesman added that the scheme is implemented in areas with more elderly residents, and at crossings where elderly or disabled pedestrians are likely to use.
The authorities have also been studying the impact of such scheme on the traffic. So far, the most frequent activation of the scheme took place at Ang Mo Kio Ave 10 near Block 409. There is an average of 32 activations per day.
