The 4008 is based on Mitsubishi’s ASX crossover, which is also sold as the Outlander Sport in the US, and the RVR in Canada and Japan. Mitsubishi and the PSA Peugeot-Citroen group had signed an agreement in early 2010 which will see both companies sharing cars, with the 4007 already based on the Outlander.
The 4008 measures 4,340mm long, making it 295mm shorter than the 4,635mm long 4007, 1,800mm wide and 1,630mm tall, and has a 2,670mm long wheelbase. Four engines will be made available, with two petrol and two diesel units. The petrol engine range consists of a 1.6-litre powerplant that produces 116bhp and 152Nm of torque, as well as a 2.0-litre unit with 150bhp and 198Nm of torque. Both engines are offered with a five-speed manual gearbox as standard, with a CVT auto being an option on the 2.0-litre.
The diesels, meanwhile, are a 1.6-litre with 1.6-litre HDi turbo diesel with 112bhp and 270Nm of torque, and a 1.8-litre HDi turbo diesel that churns out 150bhp and 300Nm of torque. Both units come with a six-speed manual gearbox as standard.
The 4008 is available with both front-wheel-drive and four-wheel-drive, and the 4WD system has three modes: 2WD, in which power is directed only to the front wheels, 4WD and LOCK. In the last two, torque is directed to all four wheels and its distribution is controlled electronically according to the road conditions.
