BMW is testing the acoustic properties of the upcoming all-electric luxury limousine, the i7, at its Research and Innovation Centre in Munich.
The site is equipped to both recreate and selectively eliminate any irritating noises registered by development engineers during test drives on the road.
The test facility's rolling dynamometers feautre interchangeable surface coverings that allow testing of tyre noise on all road surfaces To further ensure quiet operation of the i7, BMW is also targeting noiseless power delivery from the car's electric motor, and to this end, the i7's drive system has also received acoustic optimisations including a model-specific mount and a newly developed noise encapsulation for the electric motors.
Increased body rigidity at the front end and tyres with a foam absorber on the inside for integrated noise insulation also help to raise the acoustic and vibration comfort of the new luxury sedans to an outstanding level.
The firm also makes use of an acoustic climate test bench in order to simulate the vehicle operation in a wide variety of conditions, allowing for optimisation of the acoustics of the air conditioning and ventilation system throughout the entire vehicle.
Finally, the use of an acoustic wind tunnel allows the aeroacoustics of the BMW i7 to be perfected. To this end, the car is set to get flush-fitting door handles, aerodynamically optimised exterior mirrors and an almost completely closed underbody.
