Most inspiring, best German deal
If you tried Grand Turismo 6 recently, you would have been somewhat awestruck by the Mercedes Benz AMG Vision Grand Turismo Concept. Besides helping you fall in love with the brand, you would also have learnt that Mercedes has already shed its uncle-ish Rolex image to more of a Zenith watch-like complication. Mercedes has grown so much now that it essentially represents a bratwurst smack in the faces of its German competitors.
Since the COE fiasco, it is safe to assume that the average Singaporean wants/has a BMW. Many who could only afford a respectable Japanese make, traded in practicality for a sad, entry level BMW so that his wife can shut the aunties (who know nothing about cars) in her workplace. Also, we have heard many times of fresh graduates who saved up hard for a BMW 1 series or 320i and made a purchase decision so poor that their lives have become a false sense of achievement. Most entry-level Beemer owners can't maintain a conversation about their ride other than saying "It's a BMW".
BMW for whatever the reason, went full-China and cloned its front mask on almost its entire lineup. Audi went full lightweight, and pretty much had the same effect on our gym-going nation when apparel stores replaced with slim-fit.
Mercedes-benz with its bold design curves, muscular and edgy front face and aggressive LED styling has done the one thing the others German makes have failed - to inspire. Buying a continental in the 200k range should not be about wealth exhibition, instead should be a display of passion.
To those who saved up roughly this much for an entry level continental, the CLA Diesel is perhaps the best thing you can and should buy. If its practicality you want, a Camry or an Accord costs about the same.
However to those who want to stand out as an inspiration, those who enjoy torquey launches from standstill and want to leave the carpark looking back at the car with a heartwarming smile, this CLA Diesel is the perfect companion.
Amidst the pool of working poor continental car owners, the CLA stands out as a reminder that no, my owner is not up there yet, but he's not pretending to be. He knows his cars and enjoys driving.... Read More
