What we like
The opportunity to stop at a campsite and leave the air-conditioning on
Quiet drivetrain operation
Space for five and all their luggage
No discernible compromise when it comes to off-road capability
A plug-in hybrid that can make use of direct current chargers
What we don’t like
Fuel efficiency isn't great once that high voltage battery goes flat

Brilliant and I want one.
Imagine buying a country club membership and getting free lifetime parking at its premises. Well, this is a lot like that. However, paying almost 5 times of a club membership to have EV lot rights is a weird flex.
You know what, I'll still take it.
I have spent too long sitting on the configurator pages decking "My" Defender in British Racing Green. The idea of a limitless vehicle and the ability to go anywhere is a trait few cars have. The Defender is one of 2 cars that just completes me as a man. (911 for those who get the type of person I am)
While some years ago i would have argued that a 2L version is underpowered and crazy - it is actually a fantastic variant for Singapore. Being in a country where your Defender won't get stolen is already a great plus. Now the ability to renew COE without a painful road tax?
I will renew COE on this every 10 years.
Here are 4 reasons why the PHEV Defender is so compelling:
1. Nothing screams louder than sending your kid to school in a Defender. It feels like part Bond villain, part mafia. Parents-meet-teacher sessions become breezy. Your kids get all the help from teachers they deserve.
2. I'm going to park in EV lots. Its still the same old greasy petrol burning C2 underneath. Nobody is going to stop (or "Stomp") you.
3. I'm just going to sit in this high riding opulent swamp monster with aircon full blast and have my meeting. Heck I'm going to camp out with this everywhere
4. 90L Fuel Tank? Very few cars today have huge fuel tanks. This is such a big win.
Have you ever looked at those folks who just decide to drive across countries from Singapore? Some people do it in very questionable cars - and document their failures as part of life.
That's just unnerving when you pay for top luxury. I cannot afford downtime. I need this punching walls like a G Wagon in Moscow.
All terrain. Comfortable. Fuel efficient. And I don't have to look for a charger in the middle of nowhere.
I've never said this before - whoever planned this variant is brilliant.... Read More
