Volkswagen's Sister.
The Superb at first glance is a very huge car, you might think it will feel cheap but you are 100% wrong. The Superb is a executive car that might trick people into thinking its a Volkswagen, Mercedes, Volvo etc with its Škoda badge covered.... Read More
A Match Made in Heaven - 6-speed DSG + 3.6 V6 FSI
The first thought that came to mind when I saw the Superb was "Skoda has really come a long way!". The general public perception of the brand can be summarised by the following three words -"unreliable", "second-rate" and "budget". What Skoda has achieved in the technology department has sadly not been duplicated in the marketing department.
The interior finishing is excellent with minimal hard plastics and plenty of soft rubber surfaces. Well-designed ergonomics of the cabin ensure the essentials are within reach while the electric seat controls allow the driver tremendous flexibility in seating position, maximising his view of the road.
Legroom is phenomenal for both the front and rear passengers, comparable to that provided in the long wheelbase versions of the BMW 7-series and Merc S-class. The comfortable leather seats provide firm support for the back and legs. Headroom is adequate but not fantastic. NVH in the Superb is above average. Wind noise is almost non-existent even at speeds above 130km/h and the cabin is well-insulated against road noise.
The steering is sharp, with slight understeer and conveys a strong sense of confidence even when taking corners at non-conservative speeds. The ride is firm without sacrificing comfort and the suspension feels more than capable to take on the undulations and aberrations of Singapore roads. Brakes are highly effective with incredible assist and I had full control at all times and speeds.
What blows me away is the immense power that is offered. The figures on paper look good but this car requires an actual drive to appreciate the out-of-this-world torque and acceleration. On paper the 0 to 100 timing is 6.5s but it feels very much faster than that in reality. The huge amount of torque adds to the WOW factor when you pull away easily from the crowd, not to mention the oh-so-sweet engine note.
The 6-speed DGS gearbox is incredible, providing seamless gear changes even in times of hard & powerful acceleration. While it is not perfect, especially in cases when the acceleration path is cut short, it complements the power in the 3.6l FSI engine. The Superb 3.6 is a very capable sedan that holds its own very well against the likes of the Passat and A8 in any street setting.
Kudos to Skoda for a brilliant car!... Read More
