Review
Bought the 2010 model 4 yrs ago. After 70,000 km covered, over highways, city driving, SG and MY roads. Decided to write a long term review on this car.
1) Looks - overall this car looks normal. It wont excite you everyday when you wallk towards it, neither will it put you off after looking at it for too long.
2) Interior space - Sits 4 adults comfortably, 5 would be a slight squeeze due to the center hump. Air-con is quite strong but has a strange mind of its own. Set at 22 deg, it slowly lowered the fan speed to min during the hot afternoon!
3) Performance - powerful for a 1.4 due to super & turbo charging. Good if you always dart in and out of the gaps in traffic. Suspension leans towards to sporty side and you'll feel the bumps, potholes and road conditions. The front is 300kg heavier hence understeer is quite obvious esp when turning at speed.
4) comfort - Average, my old toyota 1.3 was quieter, Altis was quieter, swift 1.3 manual was about the same. Vios slightly nosier, Fit 1.3 nosier.
5) Reliability - refused to start 2 times in carpark, jerking during 1st & 2nd gear during acceleration, mechcatronics had to be replaced once.
6) Maintenance - more ex than Japan cars seems like every item need add extra just because it is a Conti car.
Overall - Good power, however there is this nagging uncertainty at the back of your brain that it will breakdown. Which it did, 3 times in the past 4yrs. My toyota never broke down in the 8yrs of driving it.
What I like
Turbo!
What I do not like
Reliability.......... esp once you reach 5yrs, the turbo and supercharger have quite a few extra parts to replace. this is above and on top of the normal car parts like your brakes, timing belts, aircon belts.....

I was initially looking at the Toyota Prius after reading about its review on the net.
Borneo motors was offering a model which I think was a base model. My backseat driver (wife) commented on the narrow seat. So we decided to look at other model around Leng Kee area. At that time my current model was a Civic 1.6. Did not want to look at another Honda again because their service sucks even though my last two model was a Honda.
So we ended up at VW, when I saw the specs of the Jetta 1.4 TSI sports, it was love at first sight. Went back home and read up everything about the Jetta on the net. Went back to VW to confirmed the order, presto three weeks later I'm driving the car.
Got it within the first bid,
What I like
Love the pick up,
Love the quietness,
Love the power,
Love the FC,
What I do not like
Did not like the GPS, cannot find my postal code.
Sales man pretty stingy.
Came without solar film sales man say window already have tint with 60% heat rejection. - I can live with it and got it installed at v-cool for $900.00.
Did not like the speakers, remove and replace the speakers and plonk in an amplifier. Total sound system cost $2000.00 at "Audio Image"

Previous Hyundai Sonata broke down after water was found in the engine, it was 6 years old and giving a lot of problems, decided to change to another car, my father wanted to get an Avante but i found it too common. Suggested a Golf and we went to view it. All was good till he opened the boot, he plays golf, but this golf isn't ideal for 2 sets of golf equipment. Looking around, we saw the Jetta (essentially a Golf with a rear), he was sold on the boot size as well as on the test drive.
Fast forward 8 months later, I enjoy driving this car, it's great for spirited driving, it's pretty quiet, very solid at higher speeds, though the handling is not as good as the GTI , it's a family sedan of course, not a hot hatch. My father who sees a car as something that takes him from A - B seems to like the car too. Hating to drive the Jazz that we have. In fact, I like to drive this out too and he frowns upon it.
From the exterior, it looks like any slow family car out there but it's a little devil in there, it overtakes at will and will make the jaws of those who do not know the power of the Jetta TSI drop.
Mind you this is the basic TSI and not the TSI Sport, I've not driven the TSI Sport yet but at 40+ ponies more, I'm sure it's no little devil, it's the devil.
7 speed DSG is very smooth, and is just as joyful when you use the flappy paddle.
The ICE (In Car Entertainment) could have been better, no AUX and single CD.
Driver's seat is all manual and I would prefer the lever for adjusting the seat like in Japanese cars then the ratchet.
As to the manufacturer's claim to the fuel consumption, it's probably not accurate but with this car, it brings smiles after a day's work.
The reason why I did not give full marks for value for money is because, back in 2009, the TSI Sport was only 4k more. That, would have been absolute bang for bucks.
What I like
Smooth gear changes
Flappy Paddles
1.4 Turbo that behaves like or better then a 2.0 Natural Aspirated engine (not comparing to Civic Type R's)
The discreet "Psst" sound when you release the accelerator
Excellent pick up
Controls on the steering wheel
Superb boot Space
Ride comfort
What I do not like
Single CD Changer and no AUX for Ipod
Ratchet for adjusting seat
Pricey repairs (Side mirror was damaged in an incident)
Brakes could be better
Could have HIDs instead
Jetta GLI | Posted on 10 May 2010 |

I realize they don't sell this model here at VW S'pore (need to order it in), but if you can get hold of one, I recommend it. The posers will pick up the Beemers. They'll be eating your dust (except for maybe the 335s and the M3s). The GLI does 0-100k in 6.7s, so it's plenty quick. Handling is excellent. Road noise zero. Build quality outstanding. I wanted a sedan for family use, but also wanted something with performance - a tough ask. The GLI is the perfect mix. To be fair, the 1.4 Jetta sports should be good enough - but if you want that little extra, there is nothing like the GLI. That's the reason why you rarely see these models on the roads - it's for the discerning few. There's a good article on this car on this site. Read it.
What I like
1) Performance.
2) The understated look of the car.
3) Perfect size for parking and getting about the city.
4) Humongous boot!
5) The Jekyll and Hyde car - practical and outrageous!
What I do not like
It's all good.

I test drove this car 2 fortnight ago. The ride was smooth like other vw models. DSG might take time to get used to it but can be fun if used to. Price is not very good compared to the usual Japanese suspect. Safety is spot on, 6 air bag.
What I like
Mostly all
What I do not like
Can be intimidating if not used to DSG

To set the context, I am writing based on my transition from a quintessential made-in-Japan car, to the VW Jetta TSI.
Before even starting the engine, the entry into the car,the solid door and solid thud, just kickstarts a solid relationship with the Jetta TSI. Insulation as it is, is definitely good.
The wide array of panel controls, functions, buttons, levers, lightings etc are something to shout about, simply because they not only provide value-added convenience, but also brought ergonomics into play.
The 7-speed DSG engine gives you such pure silk-smooth transmission that you don't even know when the change-up was. However, the subtle and smooth transmission belies the fact that you are in fact acceleration at a much faster rate than all other cars. Get used to seeing other vehicles left behind at the traffic light. It is not that they are slow, it is just that the Jetta TSI gives a really quick take-off. And guess what? There never was a need to cross 2000rpm in all these!
That brings me to the fuel consumption. A combination of both city and rural (40-60) clocks me between 12 - 16 km/l, which gives an average of 14+km/l, fantastic by any measurements, esp. given the turbo-charged engine at the driver's dispense. When the need arises, a moderate tap on the pedal simply sets fly the Jetta. When i did see the look of the cars i passed by, they were all in awe. But when i stole glances at my meters, the rpm was only at 3000rpm+. Sheer pull-away pleasure.
Paintwork is fantastic and of a high quality. Interiors are luxury standards, not to mention the many wonderful frills that are left to be discovered by reading the 2-inch thick manual. Mine you, it is not in multiple languages, the entire 2-inch is english and touches on a very wide scope of information regarding the Jetta.
Overall, the good insulation allows the driver to enjoy crisp audio effects, while the handling and power gives confidence to times when you really really need to pull ahead. But it is not red bull. Though inherently powerful, driving the Jetta TSI has made the entire driving experience a much calmer experience, as the DSG gears and other electronics caters to your every moves. With low road tax, insurance, excellent fuel economy, luxurious feel, hidden gems .. WOW!
What I like
- Good insulation
- Good bodyworks
- Superb handling and power
- Luxurious interior
- Value-for-money
- Plenty of undiscovered gems
- Excellent Fuel Consumption
- Perfect score safety rating
- 6 airbags + curtain airbags
- etc ...
What I do not like
- Left leg space is a little big narrow for an almost 1.8m person
- Bi-Xenon white headlamps would be a plus
- The sunglass compartment is too small and cannot fit my oakleys
- The boot has a specially built right compartment for storing car-wash items and preventing it from flying around the boot. The compartment is very useful and should be made on both left and right sides of the boot interior.

After driving a very common Jap car for the last 10 yrs, I decided to look for a conti preferrably at Jap car price + reliability + value for money 'accessories' + Jap car fc + spacious enuf for a big-size family... have I mentioned Jap car PRICE?
I was told it is impossible, I can dream on... Then I found this car.
For about a few $K more, I got safety (6 airbags) + stability/handling above 100km/hr + all the above. In fact, it was a no-brainer decision made on the spot!

Have been contemplating numerous makes with a budget below $100k prior to deciding on the Jetta TSI.
This includes testing several reputable marques below $100k including makes at a 2L range.
One of the wishlist is perhaps a factory option to improve the performance specifications like what we see from Saab, etc.
Overall, this is a close to perfect family sedan to me.
What I like
The Jetta was huge for its engine capacity and produces amazingly decent power range across rpm besides the fuel frugality and a cavernous boot.
not forgetting the super friendly low road tax.
Cabin was comfortable and well fitted and has all the safety features (ABS, ESP, EDL, 8 airbags) and gadgets one would long for and expect too (auto lights, anti-dazzle, auto wipers, auto wing mirrors, rear aircon vents, etc).
Real value for money for the price I paid vs other makes of the same size which produces approx the same specifications regardless conti or jap makes.
What I do not like
One of my gripes was it didnt come with a sunroof option (which i had in my previous car and luved it).
the rims could perhaps be upsized to 17" as the looks would have enhanced by leaps and bounds.
floor board insulation could be better tho it is already better than many other make at this price.
The internal air recirculation mode needs to be activated everytime you restart the car which is though a safety feature but a hassle.
No HID/xenon which is not expensive to include inside as a standard feature.
Some would find the interior teutonic and boring though i am receptive to it.

Tested the Jetta last weekend. When on straight road, the engine is pretty quiet. Engine is also responsive when rev at high torque and gear change is quiet or can't feel it.
Cruising is like typical continential which is normal but when turning will feel slightly out... maybe a antiroll bar may help.
Overall its a good car to get as you can get a VW for a ok price as its a 1.4L but powers you like a 1.8L or even 2.0L (without paying the high road tax).
:-)
What I like
Decent legroom
VW Engine with DSG
Leather trimming interior
Tinting provided (so no need to do from outside)
Good and responsive engine, a typical VW
Boot space
What I do not like
Price a bit ex if above $80k, VW should price slightly lower than $77k.

Smooth & good pick up supercharger + turbocharger baby of the Passat. Its definitely the Best Value for money! Continental Car which cost below $90K. The interior is lifted straight from the hatch - no bad thing, as it means the car benefits from an ergonomically simple dash layout and a wide range of steering wheel and seat adjustment. The materials used are also excellent, while build quality is top drawer. Massive door pockets, a dash-top tray and a well designed transmission tunnel mean there's plenty of stowage, too. Overall, the cabin is pleasant and comfortable, and details such as the lovely blue and red instrument lighting ensure that it has a very attractive feel. Where it really scores is in boot space, however. The 527-litre load capacity is so large, it's even an amazing 42 litres up on the larger Passat! A wide boot opening, split-fold rear seats and a ski hatch ensures this VW is nearly as practical as a five-door. There's even a practical hook that swings down from the boot roof, for carrying shopping bags. The rear cabin is spacious as well, with decent legroom and good headroom. Prices are generally decent value too. Residuals are also impressive, though not quite as good as the more popular Golf. For best returns, choose the Sports
What I like
Mostly I love Volkswagen so much most probably Golf GTI can't imagine to own it but what can I say? I can't effort it....budget. At lease I got Jetta Sport which is known as Golf Saloon version. Volkswagen certainly gives customers plenty of choice as to which Golf suits their lifestyle. Yet all the many versions share a common appearance: thus, the Jetta four-door saloon's front end is identical to the Golf hatch. But not just any Golf. By using the full-length chrome-effect grille from the R32, the company has cleverly managed to distinguish the Jetta from other models. What's more, the unique side panels have the high shoulder line and tight shut gaps that give all VW and Audi predicts their robust look. At the rear, the Jetta shares its jewel-like tail lights with the Passat. Unlike its bigger brighter, the number plate sits on the boot rather than down on the bumper, but otherwise the two are virtually identical. It may lack excitement, but the Jetta boasts an upmarket feel. Saloon versions of family hatchbacks used to abound, but not nowadays. The Jetta's most obvious rivals the Mazda 3 saloon and Renault Megane Sport Saloon; Ford, Vauxhall and Peugeot all don't offer four-door versions of their popular models.
What I do not like
I like Volkswagen, so sorry, no comments in here

Review
I chose the VW because after 5 years with japanese and another 5 years with French, i decided that the premium payable for safety is worth it.
VW J was quite affordable after the recent spate of low COEs with cheaper car prices.
Insofar the car has not disappointed. External Styling was ok, although the driver seat is more cramped than my previous Renault. I would have thought the leather could be better (e.g. fitting with those found in R36! :)) Mileage was ok with about 8 lit/100 km. Since the car is new, everything is still ok !
What I like
Its affordability.
What I do not like
Rather cramped driver seat space for the legs [especially left leg].
No portable small rubbish bin (unlike those found in Renault) that can be fitted into the car spaces.
Review
Coming from the Toyota markx with 212hp V6, after the test drive we were very happy from the performance from the Jetta's 1.4 engine partly due to the quick shifting of the DSG.
Overall a very capable family sedan to fulfill family needs.
Car was left in stock condition and serviced only by VCS.
Covered over 75,000km during the 4years.
handling is very sharp and performance should satisfy most family men/women.
Owned this car for total of 4 year and experienced lots of problems.
1) Turbo not spooling within the 1st week (fixed after a 10min software dyno).
2) Gearbox MU dead slightly after 1year (MU replaced under warranty).
3) Wing mirror lighting cover fell off suddenly.
Other than the above issues encountered, the Jetta is a good value and economical family sedan for the sporty family with decent performance, comfort and safety.
What I like
Perky performance from 1.4 Twin-charge engine.
Performance of DSG gerbox.
Sharp handling.
High speed stability.
Boot space.
LED taillight.
6 Air bags
Active safety features(ESP, ASR)
What I do not like
Reliability.
Only 3 years warranty from VCS (the main reason why i'm moving away from VW).
Very bad after sales service.
