The Land Transport Authority (LTA) will embark on a new 'Silver Zone' pilot programme, where new features aimed at improving road safety for the elderly will be introduced in five residential estates.
Some of the proposed changes include, special road signs and markings along with centre dividers and road humps. In addition, the speed limit along certain roads would also be reduced to 40km/h.
According to LTA, works for the new programme would commence in early August at two estates first - Bukit Merah and Jurong West - and is scheduled to be complete by the end of the year. Three more estates - Bedok, Yishun and Marine Parade - are also expected to receive the enhancements.
LTA revealed, the five neighbourhoods were chosen based on the relatively high accident rates involving the grey population.
The road enhancements were drawn up based upon observing best practices in foreign countries like South Korea and the United States, and were also announced earlier in the Committee of Supply Debate.
