The Straits Times reported that new digital red light cameras have helped to nab more errant motorists for beating the red light.

The Traffic Police issued more than 25,833 traffic summonses between March and September this year - a 37.4 percent increase compared to the 18,796 summonses for the whole of 2013.

They attributed the increase to new cameras that can recognise licence plate numbers and do not require film changes. Previously, films had to be processed for police to identify errant drivers.

The new cameras, which have been operational since March, are currently in 120 locations around Singapore. For the past four years, 39 people have died because drivers ran red lights. The penalty for running red lights is 12 demerit points and a $200 fine.
