On the debut of the Audi R8 LMS Cup at Sepang International Circuit, Alex Yoong put on a splendid show, winning both Round 7 and 8 of the series race.

It is an adrenaline-filled weekend at the Sepang International Circuit, where Round 7 and 8 of the Audi R8 LMS Cup will be joined by the 12-hour Malaysia Merdeka Endurance Race (MMER). This is the first time the R8 LMS sprint series sets foot in the Asia Pacific region. Following the cup, four Audi customer race teams will enter the MMER on Sunday, 1st September.

Round 7 of the series took place yesterday, where Alex Yoong of Audi TEDA Racing Team came in first on his home ground. Yoong took pole position during the qualifying session.

But during the eventful race, he lost two places in the first corner to Hong Kong driver Marchy Lee and Cheng Congfu 'Franky'. Lee took the inside line to emerge first out of turn one, with Cheng close behind in second.

Yoong, however, delighted his home crowd by passing Cheng with seven laps to go. He then went on to hunt for the pack leader, Lee, and managed to regain the first place with three laps to go on the counter.

A mistake on turn 14 almost cost Yoong the top spot, as he went wide around the corner and allowed Lee and Cheng to close up the gap. Luckily, he held the rein and drove down on the inside of Lee, and successfully brought the #8 car home to victory.

At Round 8, which took place this afternoon, Yoong learnt from his mistake yesterday and got off to a good start, which saw him leading the pack for the whole of the race, and claimed the top spot second time in a row.

The two victories have propelled Yoong to the first spot in the Driver's standings - with 141 points. He overtook previous board leader, Chinese racer Adderly Fong, who stands second with 132 points. Hong Kong driver Marchy Lee sits third on the chart with 121 points.

The following rounds of the Audi R8 LMS Cup will be held in Shanghai (25th to 27th October) and Macau (9th to 10th November).

Watch this space as we bring you the full cover of the MMER 2013, which will flag off tomorrow (1st September) at midnight.
