The all new second generation Lexus NX has made its world premiere. The new NX marks the first model of the brand's third generation of cars, combining vital dynamism and advanced technology. And, as part of the 'Lexus Electrified' vision, the new NX is also available both as a Hybrid Electric Vehicle (HEV) and a Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV).
The design of the new NX pursues simplicity even as it is rooted in athletic proportions. According to Mr. Koichi Suga, General Manager, Lexus Design Division, "The front hood has been lengthened, while the rear overhang appears shorter, creating a condensed rear mass and a sense of agility."
With large curved surfaces and an emphasised three-dimensional look headlined by the upright spindle grille, the new NX aims for a more modern and futuristic look. Additionally, the L mark and the Lexus logo are no longer used together and have been replaced with a new spelt out Lexus logo at the rear, updated with a simpler and more modern-looking typeface.
The interior of the NX has been thoroughly modernised, and is the first based on the Tazuna Concept - the word tazuna is derived from the 'reins' used to control horses.
Key to the NX's cabin design is creating a focused driving experience. The layout of the information system components leading from the head-up display (HUD) to the gauges and from the HUD to the centre display allows for smoother, less distracted eye movement while driving. The new 14-inch centre display also integrates many key functions within its touchscreen operation, thus reducing the number of physical buttons on the centre console.
The NX also features Touch Tracer Operation, an operation method that combines the HUD with touch sensor switches on the steering wheel. When the driver touches the touch sensor switches on the steering wheel, the operation guide is displayed on the HUD (or on the meter when the HUD is off), allowing more intuitive operation without the need for a driver to look at their hand and keep eyes forward.
As far as interior space is concerned, Mr. Takeaki Kato, Chief Engineer, Lexus, highlights that while the overall size of the NX isn't significantly different, certain subtle engineering changes have been executed to create a more comfortable and cosseting cabin. The rear passenger hip point is 30mm lower, while the front seats are positioned 5mm more to the outside, thus creating 10mm more space between driver and front passenger.
The new NX features a diverse powertrain lineup to cater to different customers and markets.
A first for Lexus is the new PHEV model, equipped with a thermally-efficient 2.5-litre inline-four engine, a high-capacity, high-output lithium-ion battery, and front and rear electric motors. The lithium-ion battery has an impressive power output of 18.1kWh, providing a class-leading EV range and power for daily driving.
Along with the PHEV, the new NX is also offered with a 2.5-litre HEV powertrain, a naturally aspirated 2.5-litre powerplant, as well as a newly developed turbocharged 2.4-litre engine.
Underpinning the new NX is the GA-K platform, offering a lightweight, highly rigid body with a low center of gravity to enable superior handling. This is what the brand calls the Lexus Driving Signature tuning philosophy, focused on driver connection, control and confidence.
The new NX also comes with the latest Lexus Safety System+ with expanded functions and enhanced performance. On top of enhancements to systems like Pre-Crash Safety, Radar Cruise Control, Lane Tracing Assist and Proactive Driving Assist, the latest LSS+ also features an E-Latch System (which replaces the latch mechanism of the door with electrical control), as well as the Panoramic View Monitor (which has a new function to display images of the road surface taken in the past directly underneath the vehicle to help the driver understand the road surface and tire position underneath the vehicle).
The new Lexus NX is expected to be launched in Singapore in Q4 this year. According to Lexus Authorised Distributor Borneo Motors, three variants will be brought in - the 2.5 Plug-in Hybrid, 2.5 Hybrid, and 2.4 Turbo.
