The first generation BMW 2 Series Active Tourer (as well as the seven-seater Gran Tourer variant) sold like hotcakes in Singapore. Combining functionality, practicality and luxury at a keen price point, the model managed to bring in many new customers to the brand globally (one of the key goals for the brand outlined at the start).
The new second generation model looks to continue the model's success with a sharp new design, elevated interior equipment, enhanced powertrains, all while maintaining the model’s functionality and accessibility.
The visual changes on the 2 Series AT are headlined by the large kidney grille at the front. Clean, reduced surfaces also contribute to the car's more sporty exterior profile. The car also comes standard with LED lights front and back (which are slimmer than before), as well as larger rims than before.
The 2 Series Active Tourer marks the debut of BMW's latest iDrive system in the compact segment. Based on the Operating System 8 that debuted in the flagship iX, the 2 Series Active Tourer receives a Curved Display formed by a 10.25-inch information display and a 10.7-inch control display. This gives drivers access to all the latest functionality available, including features like the Augmented View navigation function, Remote 3D View and BMW Drive Recorder, among many others.
The revised cabin geometry also takes cues from the iX, including the new steering wheel, the 'floating' centre console with redesigned controls, as well as reduction in physical control elements throughout the cabin. Together with the newly developed seats, this provides improved comfort for all passengers across long journeys.
The new 2 Series also sees a significant enhancement in terms of powertrain technology. The top-of-the-range 230e model is a plug-in hybrid, which features the fifth-generation BMW eDrive technology that delivers improved electric range, faster charging, and greater efficiency.
More relevantly for Singapore (as there are currently no plans to bring in the PHEV model), the 2 Series Active gets three petrol engines at launch - the 218i, 220i and 223i. The 218i features a 1.5-litre turbocharged engine producing 134bhp and 230Nm of torque, while the latter two models also get the additional boost of a 48V mild-hybrid system.
The 220i has an output of 154bhp and 240Nm of torque from a 1.5-litre powertrain, whilst the 223i has a 2.0-litre engine producing 215bhp and 360Nm of torque. As of now, only the 218i has been confirmed for Singapore.
The new BMW 2 Series Active Tourer is expected to be launched in Singapore next month, with two variants of the 218i being offered (Luxury and M Sport). While pricing details are as yet unconfirmed (especially with the potential for significant COE changes), the car is projected to be priced around $200,000 to $210,000 inclusive of COE.
