Singapore's time in Toyota's e-motorsports series - the Toyota Gazoo Racing (TGR) GT Cup - has officially come to an end for 2022.
After 20 local qualifiers - also including drivers from Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia, the Phillipines, Taiwan and South Korea - duked it out in the Asian Cup on 29 October 2022, two names have emerged on top. Reigning champion of the 2021 TGR GT Asia Cup, Nathayos Sirigaya from Thailand, returned to take the crown again. Meanwhile, Andika Rama M. from Indonesia finished in second place.
Zaim Rasyad, Ethan Yoh, and Fadtris Isa previously emerged as champions of the Singapore Cup Back in October, three familiar faces had surged to the top of the Singapore Cup.
The TGR GT Cup sees sim-racers taking on both tracks only found in the Gran Turismo simulation game, as well as iconic circuits that exist in the real world. The Asia Cup's three semi-final rounds started on the Fuji International Speedway, where the 20 local qualifiers competed within their allocated groups (A to C) with the GR Yaris race car.
With only the top five from each group moving forward, the finals then saw the top 15 taking on three separate tracks. Following round one in the GR Supra 20 at the Circuit De Barcelona-Catalunya, racers moved on to the GR Supra Race car for a wet weather race at the Nurburgring GP. The final round was held at the Le Mans Circuit de la Sarthe, with Toyota's 952bhp LMP-car, the TS GR010.
Racers took on the TS GR010 Hypercar in the final Asian round at Le Mans Circuit de la Sarthe As with the previous two iterations of the Asian cup, fascinating livery designs inspired by local cultures were brought to life once more on the virtual race cars by Asia-based artists.
The top three country teams were also recognised in the race. Team Malaysia managed to clinch team championship with 120 points in total, while Team Indonesia came in first runner-up with 110 points. Team Thailand secured 104 points to finish third.
Sirigaya and Rama M. will now progress on to the Global Finals of the TGR GT Cup. Slated to take place some time in November, the international leg will see both participants going up against the world's strongest e-motorsport racers.
