  • Toyota Gazoo Racing and Lexus confirm 2023 Tokyo Auto Salon attendance, hint at what to expect

The brands will follow the theme of 'Leaving no car lovers behind', while showcasing motorsports and outdoors-oriented vehicles that aim for carbon neutrality.

As the 2023 Tokyo Auto Salon swings into view, Lexus and Toyota's motorsports division, Toyota Gazoo Racing (TGR), have both confirmed their attendance at Japan's most prominent auto show.

They're also doing so with an enticing promise: Of giving a voice to the automotive enthusiasts among us, even as Toyota has remained ambivalent on a future based solely on battery-electric vehicles.

Toyota has put its weight behind a multiple-pathway approach to carbon neutrality - beyond just BEVs
Under the shared theme of 'Leaving no car lovers behind', the brands will exhibit their vehicles and automotive parts in line with three concepts.

The first of these is 'carbon neutrality for protecting beloved cars'. Toyota has long said it is committed to offering customers more choices even as it aims for carbon neutrality, and concept cars exhibited by TGR and Lexus will envision a future where customers "continue to drive forever in their beloved cars" while reducing carbon emissions.

A special product that will celebrate TGR's recent successes in the World Rally Championship (WRC) will be unveiled under the second concept of 'making ever-better motorsports-bred cars'. Just last month, Akio Toyoda participated in a Thai endurance race behind the wheel of a GR Corolla with a hydrogen combustion engine.

Akio Toyoda recently participated in an endurance race with the ORC Rookie GR Corolla H2 Concept
TGR says it is aiming to make its cars - which have been "honed to win races" - commercially available, and another new product that has apparently emerged from its WRC experience will be unveiled using this concept. Demo runs have even been planned on the second and third days of the show with it.

Finally, the third and final concept of 'diverse lifestyles to enjoy with beloved cars' will see the exhibition of new GR Parts and GR Heritage Parts that are scheduled for release this year.

Visitors of the aforementioned Tokyo Outdoor Show can also look forward to an 'Overtrail Project' display by Lexus. While working towards the goal of carbon neutrality, the luxury marque says it is aiming to offer fun vehicles that "enhance outdoor lifestyles while coexisting with nature".

Toyota/Lexus' first-time participation in the Tokyo Outdoor Show will take shape in the 'Overtrail Project'
Beyond the shimmer of gleaming new metal, Toyota is also planning to flex its technological might in the arena of digital technologies.

Introducing its own virtual version of the 'stamp rally', an NFT Digital Stamp Rally will give visitors the chance to track their own participation at the event as they tour the venue.

QR codes will be placed at the booths of TGR and supporting companies - including Daihatsu, Tom's and Modellista - each with their own digital stamps. Those who collect all digital stamps will even receive a bonus stamp

The companies are also dipping into its own metaverse by way of a 'Virtual Garage by GR/Lexus', which is now partially open on cluster, before it widens in full when the Tokyo Auto Salon begins on 13 January 2023.

Bridging the distance for those unable to physically visit the Tokyo Auto Salon, visitors of the garage will be able to get up close at their own convenience and comfort with the exhibited vehicles, even receiving a special login gift in the process.
