  • BMW light metal foundry gets recertified by Aluminium Stewardship Initiative

The BMW Landshut light metal foundry not only utilises aluminium produced with solar power, but also recycles scrap metal salvaged from the foundry process.

The BMW Group's light metal foundry in Landshut, Germany, has once again met the standards of the Aluminium Stewardship Initiative, an international non-profit organisation supported by environmental and industrial associations, aluminium producers and processing companies.

BMW describes the light metal foundry as one of the most advanced as sustainable in the world, thanks to the use of inorganic sand cores and a virtually emission-free casting process. The foundry also begun sourcing aluminium produced using solar power in 2021. This aluminium is said to meet a third of the annual requirements at the plant.

Two thirds to the site's aluminium also comes from a recycling loop, with almost two thirds of this recycled material coming from the foundry itself, as production scrap metal is salvaged from the foundry process. This allows BMW to reduce the use of more CO2-intensive primary aluminium.

The Landshut plant produced a total of 3.3 million cast components with a total weight of more than 73,000 tonnes in 2022, with components manufactured including cylinder heads and crankcases, as well as components for electric drive trains and large-scale structural components for vehicle bodies. The BMW Group announced in 2022 that it plans to make use of green energy aluminium wheels in all its BMW and MINI products by 2024.
