  • New and updated Volkswagen ID.3 revealed

A minor design update hides a slew of usability and sustainability improvements made to the new all-electric Volkswagen ID.3.

Volkswagen has revealed the facelifted ID.3.

First revealed in September 2019, the ID.3 was the first of Volkswagen's ID. family of all-electric vehicles. This updated model is said to be the result of Volkswagen's close attention to its customers suggestions for improvement.

The facelifted Volkswagen ID.3 gets a new front bumper complete with new air curtain vertical intakes at either side
Design-wise, the new car has lost the black strip under the windscreen, a move done to visually extend the front of the car.

The Volkswagen ID.3 also now has a new front bumper, which now sports vertical air curtain intakes design to smooth air flow around the front wheels and raise aerodynamic efficiency. The taillights of the Volkswagen ID.3 have also been redesigned.

In the cabin is where most of the changes with the car have taken place. Gone is the 10-inch infotainment unit offered at launch, and in is place as standard is now a 12-inch item. Volkswagen states that the menu layout of this system has also been updated, so its layout is clearer, while the charging menu is also now on the first level of the touch display.

The 12-inch infotainment system now utilises a clearer layout, and the charging menu is now on the first level of the system
This new infotainment screen pairs with a compact 5.3-inch driver display, operated via the multifunction steering wheel.

The Volkswagen ID.3 is also now available with an optional augmented reality head-up display. This system projects information such as the vehicle speed and dynamic navigation instructions onto the windscreen and will appear to the driver at a 10m distance in front of the vehicle.

Beyond the dashboard, the door trims and seat covers of this ID.3 will utilise a Artvelours Eco microfibre material. 71% of this material is made from recyclate - a secondary raw material obtained by recycling plastic that has previously been disposed of as waste at least once.

Charging the ID.3 will now also be easier with new standard features such as Plug and Charge - which allows the car to authenticate itself and start the charging process once a charging cable is plugged in at a charging station.

A Electric Vehicle Route Planner will also now assist to ensure that long journeys are done as quickly as possible. This is done by using current and forecasted traffic information in addition to the battery charge level, and allows the car to figure out the optimal locations to stop for more charge as necessary, as well as to automatically avoid fully occupied charging stations.
