  • AC to reveal new V8-powered AC Cobra Roadster

AC Cars is not only promising a 654bhp V8 for its new Cobra Roadster, but also raised handling and a substantially improved interior.

Tired of hearing about every manufacturer's electrification goals, or the retirement of great combustion engines? This ought to warm your heart a little.

AC Cars, Britain's oldest active vehicle manufacturer, has announced that it will be revealing a new AC Cobra Roadster, and it will come powered by a V8 engine.

A 654bhp V8 is set to to feature under the bonnet of the new AC Cobra Roadster
And this doesn't look like any regular old V8 either, not with such healthy numbers as 654bhp and 780Nm.

Adding further credence to the idea that this will be a thoroughly modern performer is the added fact that customers will also get to pair this engine with a thoroughly modern 10-speed automatic gearbox, although purists may still opt to get their car with a six-speed manual.

AC Cars states that the car can be expected to hit 96km/h from a standstill in just 3.4 seconds, thanks to its low weight of just 1,500kg.

This low weight, and that engine, will all sit within an extruded aluminium spaceframe chassis developed specifically for the car, which will deliver a wheelbase that is longer than the AC Cobra Mk. VI, although the car's overall length is said to only have been raised by 110mm. AC Cars also states that the new chassis allows for optimised suspension geometry and weight distribution, so expect some tidy handling alongside all that performance.

The use of LED daytime running lights and digital instruments in the cabin all suggest the new car could be a throughly modern product
And of course, this new AC Cobra Roadster will also get exterior bodywork that will continue to follow from the iconic design of its namesake. Having said that, it looks like the interior of the car is set to get a new modern touch, thanks to the use of what AC Cars terms are 'Digital Glass' displays, set to sit alongside more conventional analogue instruments.

A new Advanced Driver Information Centre will also offer the driver easy access to all relevant engine information his/her direct eyeline, without disrupting the outstanding interior design or creating unwanted reflections on the windscreen. And customers will also get their cars with a host of hand-finished elements in the interior.

Expect the AC Cobra Roadster to make a full reveal come April 2023.
