Ford has revealed the new Puma ST Powershift.
Highlight for the new car is the fact that it now comes with a 1.0-litre three-cylinder Ecoboost engine, as opposed to the 1.5-litre unit from the car it replaces.
Roof spoiler and rear diffuser set the Puma ST Powershift apart from the regular Ford Puma The new engine is now paired to a 48V mild hybrid system, and delivers a total of 167bhp and 248Nm of torque, which is a bit less than the 197bhp output of its predecessor. The new engine comes mated to a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission, which has had its software and shift strategy optimised to raise performance and efficiency.
Ford states that as a result of these new changes, the performance crossover will complete the zero to 100km/h sprint in 7.4 seconds, while returning a claimed fuel consumption of 15.8km/L.
Retained, however, is same active exhaust valve technology as before. This technology allows the car to deliver everyday refinement in its 'Normal' and 'Eco' modes, while delivering an intense sport sound when the car is set into its 'Sport' mode.
Ford's SYNC 3 infotainment system and Ford Performance-developed sports seats feature in the cabin of the Puma ST Keeping all this performance reined in is a twist-beam suspension at the rear that offers 50% more torsional stiffness compared to the standard Ford Puma. Also assisting affairs here is the firm's patented force vectoring, non-uniform, non-interchangeable, directionally-wound springs apply vectoring forces to the rear suspension and enable cornering forces to travel directly into the spring, for increased lateral stiffness.
These work with Hitachi twin-tube frequency-reactive dampers at the front and rear, delivering the stiffness needed for enhanced body control alongside the compliance to isolate smaller road imperfections for high-speed refinement. A steering rack that is 25% faster than the standard Puma, alongside upgraded brakes complete the handling package of the Ford Puma ST Powershift.
But if the car's sitting still, passers-by will still be able to identify it as an ST vehicle, thanks to the use of a Ford Performance-embossed splitter at the front, which also offers an 80% increase in front end downforce compared to the standard Puma. While at the rear, the performance crossover gets a large roof spoiler alongside a rear diffuser.
A total of six exterior paint options are offered for the Ford Puma ST Powershift in the U.K., as well as an ST-exclusive Azura Blue.
