Hyundai has revealed new details of the Ioniq 5 N as the model undergoes cold weather testing in Sweden.
The Ioniq 5 N will be the first production all-electric model in Hyundai's N performance brand lineup when it launches later in 2023, following from the RM20e prototype and Veloster N ETCR race car, as well as the RN22e rolling lab.
Hyundai's engineers are said to have transferred their all-wheel drive know-how from the i20 N WRC Rally car into the Ioniq 5 N's E-GMP platform The car will also be the N brand's first vehicle equipped with all-wheel drive. Here, know-how is said to have been transferred from the Hyundai i20 N WRC Rally car into the E-GMP platform of the car. Hyundai's engineers are additionally optimising the dual-motor architecture for high performance in all driving conditions - even the ice lakes of Arjeplog.
Currently confirmed for the Ioniq 5 N is the presence of an 'eLSD' - an electronic control unit - which will monitor inputs from wheel sensors to accurately identify when a certain wheel needs extra torque to enhance overall vehicle grip. The control unit promises improved handling during cornering as well as during adverse driving conditions.
A 'N Drift Optimiser' system will also make its way into the Ioniq 5 N. This system will give the car a dedicated drifting mode, which will integrate the eLSD, as well as the vehicle's torque distribution system, suspension stiffness and steering effort to allow drivers of all skill levels to enjoy drifting.
Hyundai states that more information will be released of the Ioniq 5 N ahead of its global debut, which is currently scheduled for July 2023.
