  • Polestar brings its emissions per car down 8%

The firm attributes this to increased sales in markets with sustainable energy in their grids as well as its own sustainability initiatives.

Polestar has published its third Annual Sustainability Report, which outlines initiatives and performance on environmental, social and governance matters in 2022.

The firm has revealed that its relative CO2 e-emissions per car sold have gone down by 8% compared to 2021 levels. It states that it further delivered a total of 51,500 cars in 2022, an increase of 80% compared to 2021.

Polestar additionally states that while its absolute emissions have increased as a result of this scale-up, relative emissions on a per-unit-basis have reduced by 13% since 2020. It attributes this to high sales in markets with more renewable energy in their grids, as well as its own sustainability initiatives, including the use of a new aluminium supplier which uses a hydo-powered smelter. This aluminium goes into the wheels and battery trays for the Polestar 2.

The Luqiao plant in China where the Polestar 2 is built is also now running on 100% renewable electricity. The firm is also using blockchain in order to trace risk materials back to the mine, mitigating social and environmental risks in complex supply chains. Material traceability is now increased to include cobalt, mica, lithium, nickel as well as leather and wool.
