Skoda is developing a display that will signal to pedestrians when it is safe to cross the road. The grille is being developed as part of a wider urban mobility project that is looking to make roads safer for children, senior citizens and people with disabilities.
The display replaces the backlit Crystal Face grille of the Enyaq iV, and utilises LED strip holders that are programmable so they can be controlled separately, making it possible for the display to create unique animations.
These animations will allow a car to warn pedestrians waiting to cross in advance that it has spotted them. It could then stop and display green arrows, for example, to indicate to the pedestrians that it is safe to cross. And once the road is clear, the display will then switch to a different signal to warn others that the car is moving off. A car that is unable to stop when approaching a crossing could also send out a clear signal to pedestrians not to cross.
Skoda states that a technology like this could potentially help to reduce the number of overall pedestrian injuries on the road.
