BMW has raised the high-power stakes with the new i7 M70.
The new performance flagship offers up a stunning total of 650bhp and 1,015Nm of torque, although the latter figure is raised to 1,100Nm when M Launch Control or the M Sport Boost function is activated.
Eight two-tone variants and over 100 BMW Individual special paintwork colours are available for the BMW i7 M70 That output puts the BMW i7 M70 just ahead of the 649bhp output of the Mercedes-AMG EQS53, however, the Mercedes can be had with an AMG Dynamic Plus Package that will raise its maximum output up to 751bhp in Race Start mode with a boost function. The BMW i7 xDrive60, meanwhile, delivers a total of 536bhp and 750Nm of torque.
This power will also see the i7 M70 reaching 100km/h from a standstill in 3.7 seconds and makes it the most powerful model with an all-electric drive system in BMW's lineup.
The power bump comes courtesy of new electric motor at the rear, with output here raised to 483bhp as opposed to the 308bhp from the BMW i7 xDrive60. Sporting a six-phase design with a dual inverter, this motor is said to deliver a power density 25.5% higher than the unit that drives the rear axle of the BMW i7 xDrive60.
The cabin of the i7 M70 gets an M leather steering wheel and M-specific content on the Curved Display Equipped with a 101.7kWh net capacity battery, this i7 will get a WLTP range of 560km, while maximum charging speed via a direct current source is 195kW, which will allow the car to extend its range by 170km with just ten minutes of charging during a mid-journey stop.
A 'Max Range' drive mode is also now available for the i7 M70, which will limit the vehicle to 90km/h and deactivate the climate control system amongst other changes, so as to squeeze out a maximum of up to 25% more range.
Also sharing space underneath the car is an M‑specific adaptive two-axle air suspension with electronically controlled dampers and automatic self-levelling. This suspension setup gets M-specific air springs with reduced volume to offer a more direct connection to the vehicle body. An additional shear panel between the bulkhead and spring strut towers also produces a substantial increase in body rigidity at the front.
M-specific design features like the M exterior mirrors, BMW kidney grille with M badging (available with contour lighting, bespoke inlays in the rear bumper and M logos on the front side panels, will set this i7 M70 apart from the rest of the 7 Series range.
