Hyundai Motor Group has announced that it has started building an initial development model of a lunar rover together with its aerospace partners.
The group signed a joint multilateral research agreement with six Korean research institutes in the aerospace sector to run and support a consultative body to develop a mobility solution for lunar surface exploration in July of 2022.
The rover will utilise Hyundai and Kia's robotics expertise, as well as the driving system and charging parts of both firms. These components will occupy the lower section of the rover, while the upper section will hold a variety of equipment for digging, excavation and general exploration of the lunar surface.
Hyundai and its partners plan to land the rover near the south pole of the moon. The solar-powered, autonomous driving mobility unit is expected to weigh around 70kg.
