Rolls-Royce has presented a new Black Badge Cullinan Blue Shadow Private Collection, inspired by the very edge at which our atmosphere meets outer space.
Called the Karman Line, this boundary sits 99.7km (62 miles) above earth's surface. As such, only 62 examples of the Blue Shadow collection will be built, all available exclusively through Rolls-Royce's Private Offices, although the firm does add that all these already have been allocated to clients.
The front fascia and door panels of the Blue Shadow collection are painted to mirror the blue/black transition of the Karman Line At this Karman Line, the blue of the sky we see on Earth fades into the blackness of space, creating an intense dark-blue zone which Rolls-Royce describes as being where darkness becomes visible, and a world reserved for an adventurous few. This special boundary has now been encapsulated by the marque in the Blue Shadow collection.
This is done by utilising a shimmering Stardust Blue exterior paint to capture the deep blue of the upper layers of Earth's atmosphere. A satin-tinted grille surround and the aero bumper insert of the special Cullinan here recall the thermal tiles used to shield homebound Space Shuttles from the intense heat of atmospheric re-entry.
The Spirit of Ecstasy on the Blue Shadow also takes after the materials used in spacecraft - it is made of titanium and finished with a thin layer of blue-tinted lacquer which adds pearlescence while revealing the titanium's grained texture.
The Starlight Headliner of the collection also gets a Moon embroidery, created from five different colours of thread to replicate its craters Inside, the car also captures the transition from blue sky to the inky darkness of space on its fascia and door panels.
These have been created using six layers of paint, combining five different shades of blue with a deep black hue to produce a three-dimensional effect. These touches are accompanied by a Bespoke clock, unique to the Private Collection, which features light blue anodised details and a 'Blue Shadow' engraving.
The Starlight Headliner of the collection also gets a special Moon embroidery, which is surrounded by an array of stars. A total of five different colours of thread, each applied with a different technique to produce a different texture, are said to have been employed to recreate the different craters of the moon.
And on the seats - a first for Rolls-Royce - the leather features a unique perforated artwork, formed by a multitude of tiny perforations in the leather to conjure up the impression of organic, ever-shifting clouds swirling over the continents and oceans. These are said to be inspired the view of our earth from space.
