  • Skoda reveals the handsome Rapid

Skoda prematurely reveals the new Rapid, the production model of the Mission L concept that was previewed at last year's Frankfurt Motor Show.

The new Rapid utilises an extended VW Polo platform and measures 4.48m in length and 1.7m in width. Despite the compact size, the Czech automaker assures the car can comfortably seat five adults. The car also features a generous 550 litres of luggage space, which can be accessed through a tailgate that lifts together with the rear window like in the Skoda Superb. In comparison the Rapid is just 10 litres shy of boot space offered by a BMW 5 Series Estate.

The Rapid is Skoda's first production model to feature a new design language and slots between the small Fabia and the Octavia and is set to officially debut at the Paris Motor Show. It will be powered by a selection of four petrol and two diesel engines compliant to EU 5 standards.

The petrol powertrain includes the 1.2-litre three-cylinder producing 74bhp, a 1.2-litre turbo with 85bhp or 103bhp and a 1.4-litre TSI turbo with 121bhp. The two 1.6-litre diesels produce 89bhp that is scheduled for launch in the second half of 2013. Both diesel powertrains will be offered with an optional seven-speed DSG double-clutch transmission.

"This is a model which sets benchmarks in the compact saloon segment: The SKODA Rapid is a roomy, elegant and at the same time an affordable car for the whole family, impressing with clever solutions, cutting-edge technology and high economy," says Skoda boss Winfried Vahland.
