Toyota has developed a penchant for creating hybrid variants for its models and it was surprisingly at the very least when the 2013 RAV4 was debuted at the Los Angeles Auto Show without the hybrid option.
While it has not been made available at launch, it is definitely under contemplation. Yoshikazu Saeki, Deputy Chief Engineer for the RAV4, has revealed that such a model is a possibility for the future, and that the company is watching the market to gauge interest levels.
A likely powertrain for the hybrid RAV4 could be the one used in the Camry, which combines a 2.5-litre four-cylinder, with an electric motor for a total system output of 200bhp.
Recent rumours have suggested that Toyota is considering an e-4WD system for the next Prius, which could also be a good fit for a RAV4 Hybrid. The e-4WD is reportedly employing an electric motor to power the rear wheels for extra traction in slippery low-speed situations.
Even barring the market study, the hybrid won't be ready in a jiffy so expect at least a year or two before it hits the market.
