A rail crack was found between Braddell and Bishan yesterday, causing delays on the North-South Line. This is the second of such an incident in two months.
The crack was detected by an SMRT operator yesterday at around 2:30pm on the North-bound train track. For safety concerns, train speeds were limited to 18km/h on the affected area.
As such, commuters were informed that travelling time could be delayed for up to 30 minutes.
Vice President for SMRT Corporate Marketing and Communications, Kalai Natarajan, said engineers secured the rail using G-clamps by 3:20pm. Curb on train speeds were lifted by 4:00pm.
Ms Natarajan added that engineers monitored the situation closely after the clamps were installed, and that the rail fault will be replaced after operating hours so that service will resume as per normal this morning.
In an earlier notice, SMRT has announced that it will speed up ongoing programs to revamp the rail system, such as replacement of all 188,000 wooden sleepers on the North-South and East-West lines. The expected completion date will be pushed forward to 2016 from the initial 2019.
