Two new models have joined the local array of taxis, and both will command a higher flagdown rate.
The second largest taxi operator in Singapore, Trans Cab, has added 500 Renault Latitudes to its lineup. Fares for the turbodiesel sedan will start from $3.90 - a slight premium over other cabs, which can costs as low as $3 to flagdown.
Premier Taxi, on the other hand, has gone for a 'greener' choice with the Toyota Prius Hybrid. This model is the newer variant of the Prius used by Prime Taxis. Flagdown rate for this model is pegged at $3.50.
Speaking to The Straits Times, Trans Cab Chief Executive Teo Kiang Ang attributes the higher flagdown rates to the high COE premiums.
Mr Teo said, "We thought COE would be around $50,000, but now, it's over $70,000. Very high."
The local papers did not receive comments from Premier Taxi on its choice of cab or the higher flagdown rate. However, under the new regulations, the new Prius taxis are entitled for $30,000 tax rebate due to its low emissions. Moreover, as it runs on petrol, it is exempted from the annual diesel tax of $5,100.
