An elderly couple were among eight injured Singaporeans in a pre-dawn accident that occurred today when the bus they were travelling in overturned and skidded for 15 metres. The bus departed Beach Road, Singapore, at 10:00pm last night and was supposed to reach Penang 12 hours later.

Madam Ong Lai Gue and her husband Yeo Teng Quee, both 70-years of age, were conveyed to Sultanah Aminah Specialist Hospital in Johor Baru and the Sultanah Fatimah Specialist Hospital in Muar respectively. While Madam Ong sustained head injuries, Mr Yeo was taken in to stabilise his back injury and has since been discharged.

Six others passengers along with Zainal Abidin, the bus driver, and his substitute, Mohd Rusdi Ahmad, were provided with outpatient treatment in Muar and have been discharged as well. Two other Singaporean passengers travelling in the bus escaped unharmed.

According to Muar traffic police who spoke to the The Straits Times, the driver lost control of the bus, allegedly out of drowsiness, and is unlikely to face any charges.
