The heavy downpour yesterday morning caused flash floods in various parts of Singapore. The Public Utilities Board (PUB) said that heavy rain fell over central and western parts of the island between 8:15am and 9:30am, with the heaviest recorded of 102.88mm at Kent Ridge.
The flash floods have also resulted in sections of the Ayer Rajah Expressway (AYE), in the direction of East Coast Parkway (ECP), to be closed. Other flash flood areas include Commonwealth Avenue/Lane/Drive, Alexandra Road, South Bridge Road, and Maxwell Road.
The PUB added that the flood water on the AYE reached a depth of half a metre, and subsided in 40 minutes. Four lanes of the expressway were closed during the flood.
Responding to the incident, PUB has plans to upgrade the drainage system around the affected areas, particularly, Sungei Pandan Kechil. The works are expected to finish by the first half of 2015.
