  • BMW M3 and M4 - Innovative engine technology and a lightweight design

The launch of the new BMW M3 Sedan and M4 Coupe sees the M Motorsport division revealing a new interpretation of the high-performance sports car.

With more than 40,000 examples of the fourth generation M3 Coupe built, the BMW M4 is poised to continue the success story. And for the first time, the Coupe will be introduced at the same time as the four-door variant.

"Four generations of the BMW M3 have blended motor sport genes and uncompromised everyday usability within an emotionally rich overall concept. The BMW M3 Sedan and BMW M4 Coupe represent an ongoing commitment to this philosophy," explained Dr. Friedrich Nitschke, President BMW M GmbH.

One of the primary objectives in the development of the new M3 and M4 was to ensure the cars offered impressive race track capability.

The engineers worked closely with professional racing drivers such as Bruno Spengler and Timo Glock during the development phase and adapt track performance to the road after lapping the gruelling Nurburgring over a thousand times.

The engine is the heart of every M model and the newly developed high-revving in-line six bundles with M Twin Power Turbo technology produces a maximum output of 431bhp with peak torque of 550Nm. And yet, the lump returns improved fuel consumption and reduced emissions of around 25 percent.

The lightweight design concept provides crucial weight savings of around 80kg over the outgoing M3. The M4 has a kerb weight of nearly 1.5 tonnes, thanks to application of intelligent lightweight design measures including increased used of materials like Carbon Fibre Reinforced Plastic (CFRP) and aluminium for a number of chassis and body components. Additionally both models feature a carbon roof.
