With the BMW 2 Series Active Tourer, the German automaker expands its portfolio into a new model segment. The BMW hatchback blends comfort and functionality of space with the trademark BMW strengths of dynamism, style and elegance.
The Active Tourer measures 4,342mm long, sits 1,800mm wide and stands 1,555mm tall - with a 2,670mm wheelbase. The compact dimensions conflict with the spacious interior making it perfectly suited to cope with the growing challenges of urban mobility.
Unlike most cars in its stable, the 2 Series Active Tourer has adopted a front-wheel drive system that retains the degree of driver engagement expected of the brand's models.
The front drive axle in the new BMW 2 Series Active Tourer has undergone extensive refinement, ensuring that it endows the car with optimum driving dynamics and wonderfully precise steering feedback.
The front occupants enjoy a higher seating position than in a sedan, which affords a commanding all round view - along with a more comfortable access to the cabin. The cabin has a light and spacious feel to it, with all surfaces horizontally structured in a layered look. There is also the option of a large panoramic roof that floods the interior with natural light.
The versatile luggage compartment, whose capacity can be expanded from 468 to 1,510 litres, and the 40:20:40 split-folding rear backrest exemplify this model's everyday practicality. Flexibility is further enhanced by a sliding rear seat, allowing either knee room or luggage space to be increased as required.
The 2 Series Active Tourer is being launched with a choice of three powerful and fuel-efficient three and four-cylinder drive units. They boast a compact design and feature the credible TwinPower Turbo technology, while complying with EU6 emissions standards.
A 1.5-litre power unit is receiving its premiere in the guise of the BMW 218i Active Tourer. The power unit generates 136bhp and returns 20.4km/L while emitting 115g/km of CO2 when bundled to a six-speed manual gearbox.
Topping the bill is the BMW 225i Active Tourer. The four-cylinder is rated at 231bhp that provides a 6.8 second sprint to the century mark before climbing to a top speed of 235km/h. The lump returns 16.7km/L on the combined cycle while emitting 139g/km of CO2 emissions.
The four-cylinder diesel engine in the 218d Active Tourer delivers 150bhp and a peak torque of 330Nm - propelling the hatchback to a top speed of 205km/h after hitting the century mark from nought, in 8.9 seconds. The lump sips 24.4km/L of diesel while emitting 109g/km of CO2.
Besides the standard trim, two further equipment lines - Sport and Luxury - allow an individual slant on the interior and exterior. Additionally, the M Sport package opens up even greater scope for customisation. An M Aerodynamics package, M Sport suspension and 17 or 18-inch M light-alloy wheels on the outside are complemented by an M leather steering wheel and specially upholstered sports seats in the interior.
