With evolution, automakers are churning out better, more technologically advanced cars. And one of the most current focuses seem to linger around the topic of eco-friendliness - or in the aim to develop more fuel efficient engines that emit less harmful greenhouse gases.

We have seen technologies that have been conceived to help cars sip at the pumps, ranging from petrol-electric hybrid drivetrains to more aerodynamic body designs to help car slip through the air with minimal effort.

One such example is the automatic engine start/stop technology that cuts off ignition when the car is stationary at the lights.

Such advanced technologies will no doubt put more stress on other electrical components in the car. For instance, auto engine start/stop systems will cause more micro charging and discharging processes that will have impacts on the lifespan of automotive storage batteries.

The Itineris range of batteries is one of the latest genres of automotive batteries developed by Midac, called Cycling Flooded Batteries. In line with eco-motives of more recent vehicles, Itineris batteries are manufactured in plants that have obtained ISO 14001 certification.

While the conditions for functioning remain unchanged, these batteries can last for a very high number of micro charge and discharge cycles that take place when driving in urban areas - where cars engage in start and stop traffic frequently.

Itineris batteries are made to fulfil three main stages of charge and discharge functions. Firstly, the car's battery is recharged through the alternator when the vehicle is on the move.

At the lights when the car is slowed to a stop, the engine switches off and the battery is relied upon to power all on-board facilities, such as the radio and air-con. Lastly, when the system senses a lift off the brakes, the battery provides the electric power to restart the engine.

Designed with these three stages in mind, Itineris batteries feature a host of unique designs to specially cater to the strenuous requirements.

They use special lead alloys with high resistance to corrosion, as well as addictives developed for use with engine start/stop technology to ensure a longer lifecycle. The batteries also have a higher cycling aptitude of 200 percent, compared to 100 percent in conventional batteries.

Itineris batteries are also designed to fit a wide range of cars in the market. It can be installed in most vehicles with engine start/stop function and other fuel saving technologies, with the exception of cars with brake energy recovery.
