Deciphering the 'X' in xDrive

The people at BMW will have us believe that xDrive is a moniker derived for marque's four-wheel drive system. The 'x', in fact, gives a direct link to the cross country abilities of the ground conquering character of the clever drivetrain.
Since its inception more than a decade ago, xDrive has grown into a formidable lineup consisting of no less than four models - X1, X3, X5 and X6 - with the X4 and the X7 slated to join in the royal rumble in the very near future.
But what does xDrive really stand for? We had a generous dose of creative juice and came out with ten of what it could possibly mean.
1. xCellent. You would think that SUVs are excellent off-roaders. But on our urban landscape, they can be great show stoppers too. How about the driving position that gives you a commanding view?
2. xCess. They come with a little bit more of everything (cabin space, ground clearance, on-road stance, etc.). Not that you really need them in the first place, though.
3. xCiting. They imbue a sense of adventure even at standstill, and you watch the world (or cars) go by with an elevated view. These add up to sprinkle some spice to your daily humdrum commute.
4. xClusive. It doesn't take a keen eye to notice that they are the rarer 'species' on the roads. Welcome to the exclusive club.

6. xHibitionist. You wouldn't miss these metal boxes on stilts for the world. With their larger overalls, they stand out - even in a crowded carpark in the mall.
7. xPensive. These off-road warriors don't come any cheaper than their sedan cousins. That's for sure.
8. xTraordinary. They were conceived for those who seek thrills. I mean, sky diving and wake boarding aren't exactly for ordinary people. Just saying.
9. xTravagant. Naturally, opting for the costlier price tags over the 'humble' ones will mean that you have less restraint when it comes to spending.
10. xTreme. Fans of extreme sports? These cars can swallow your gears easier than bread and butter sedans. And they can prove their metal even in the most extremes of weather (think occasional 'pondings').

5. xCuse me? Their aggressive and powering stance should send a clear signal to those who see them in their rear view mirrors. Stay clear.
