  • Fibre optic lighting - Light up your imagination

Fibre optic lighting illuminates your vehicle's interior and creates a new sensation, thus enhancing your driving experience.

Interior lighting in vehicles has not changed much since the 1930s. Inefficient bulbs consume a lot of power, create more heat than light and they make the interior look gloomy.

An optical fibre acts as a 'light pipe' and transmits light
In recent years, a new trend of interior lighting has emerged. Fibre optics, though used extensively in the modern world, is actually a fairly simple, and relatively old, technology.

    What are fibre optics?

The field of applied science and engineering concerned with the design and application of optical fibres is known as fibre optics.

An optical fibre is a flexible, transparent fibre made of glass (silica) or plastic, which is slightly thicker than a human hair. It functions as a waveguide, or 'light pipe', to transmit light between the two ends of the fibre.

There are two types of lighting possible using fibre optic technology. The first is known as 'side light', a neon type band of light composed of several individual strands housed in a clear PVC jacket. 'Side light' is used primarily to 'frame' objects, such as swimming pools, vehicles, decks, signs or almost anything you can imagine.

Fibre optic lighting is versatile and has many uses as well as applications
The second application is 'end light'. 'End light' uses the same individual strands of fibre, but it is usually housed in a solid, non see-through jacket. Effects such as star ceilings, commercial signage, under water lighting, landscape fixtures and architectural illumination are common applications for 'end light'.

Fibre optic lighting by NightzConcepts and its capabilities

Fibre optic lighting is a product speciality of NightzConcepts, a local firm specialising in lighting artworks and accessories in the automotive industry.

It is capable of transmitting light without heat, electricity or ultra violet light. Light is delivered either as a continuous line of light or spread among numerous emission points from a single light bulb housed in a specially designed enclosure.

As a medium that is free from constraints of traditional lighting products, fibre optic lighting allows designers and engineers to explore the interactions of space, form, function and light to push the boundaries of visual stimulation.

    Benefits of fibre optic lighting

Fibre optic lighting changes the mood of the car's interior, creating new sensations
Fibre optic lighting is perfect for creating the sensation of sleeping under the stars, but they can also be used in a huge range of other innovative lighting designs. It is versatile and can replace traditional lighting.

In vehicles, fibre optic lighting illuminates the interior cabin, further enhancing the luxurious and cosy feeling. It can be customised to suit customers' preferences and stitched onto a wide range of upholstery or embedded into the various compartments. In fact, most of the areas in the vehicle's interior can be fitted with fibre optic lighting.

Fibre optic lighting is also available in various colours and can be interchangeable whenever there is a need for it. More notably, it can be controlled easily via an On/Off switch.

Aside to being an intrinsically protected form of special effects lighting, fibre optic lighting can carry light up to 30 metres from the light source. As the fibre is carrying light and not electricity, it is extremely safe to handle.

As the fibre optic lighting cable only transmits light, delicate materials can be illuminated without damage. More notably, the cable carries no ultraviolet light so fibre optic lighting is perfect for use in the illumination of delicate objects where colour fading and damage may be an issue.

Fibre optic lighting is also economical, as several light fixtures can be installed via only a single light source. The entire system is also reusable. Electricians are not required to be present during installation and the system operates on less than two amps.

Being extremely safe as well as durable, low maintenance is required for fibre optic lighting
What's more, fibre optic lighting requires no further maintenance as the cable is durable, UV-protected plastic, so there is nothing to break or burn out. As many light fittings can be run off a single light bulb, re-lamping costs are also further reduced.
