Over a decade ago, cars began growing larger and wider and in the last couple of years, we noticed a trend - the roads are more congested and parking spaces aren't as comfortable as before. Singapore as we know, isn't a big country. So, is owning such a large car considered practical?
What's an Attrage?
Mitsubishi revolutionised the compact car segment by launching the Attrage, a compact, eco-friendly city sedan developed on the concepts of outstanding fuel economy, a reasonable price tag and easy driving.
Last year, we reviewed the car and nicknamed it the 'City Slicker', touting it as a decent, petite city car that sets out to do what it's meant to, well. For those who haven't read the review, here's a quick recap.
The car sports a nice profile, which flows nicely from head to tail and is more mature and sophisticated than most would reckon.
Despite it's compact dimensions, the cabin is also surprisingly spacious. Because of its long wheelbase of 2,550mm, there's a generous amount of leg and headroom in the back for a trio of Asian adults. As tested by two of our lanky co-workers, who are 1.8-metres in height - one as the driver and the other seated in the back - the rear person's knees barely even touch the seatback of the driver!
Plus, its 450-litre trunk is capable of ingurgitating even a pram, child's seat, foldable bicycles, golf or grocery bags, and the list goes on.
More importantly, for a city car that's always caught in stop-start transit, this city compact's frugal fuel economy figures mean you won't have to visit petrol stations as much.
We aren't the only ones who think so
At sgCarMart, sharing is caring. As such, we invited a couple of our MyCarForum (MCF) members, to spend some time driving the car, to find out just why it's such an ideal compact car to own.
The first driver Cheryl, whose job requires her to spend a great deal of time on the roads, loves the car because its compact size makes it easy to place on the roads and easier during tight parking manoeuvres.
Just like Cheryl, Kurt and his wife (pictured above) love the car's charming design, and everyone he brought along on drives acknowledged its outstanding cabin and 450-litre trunk.
As Kurt said, "This car is great for young families, comfortable for five asian adults, easy to drive and priced so competitively. Simply put, it's a fantastic everyday car."
Kurt enjoyed the drive so much, he even wrote a comprehensive review on MCF, for the benefit of other forum members.
Our last MCF participant Kenneth (pictured in Page 1), was the heaviest user of the car. That's because he's a part-time Uber driver and this is his 'road weapon' of choice.
Again, like the two aforementioned members, he thinks that the Attrage is the best car in its class because its reasonably quiet for a 1.2-litre engine that's mated to a CVT gearbox, spacious and comfortable for four customers and their travel bags and, has low buying and operating costs.
Even when driving his customers around town, Kenneth managed to clock an average fuel consumption of 16km/L. When asked, he even confidently stated that, without a doubt, this is the car to own in its segment.
