A lorry driver has been sentenced to jail for parking his vehicle on the second lane of the Pan Island Expressway (PIE), turned off his engine and lights and went to sleep, and causing the death of a van driver who crashed into him 30 minutes later.
24-year old Anderson Rozario Esep M, a Malaysian, was sentenced to nine months' jail and banned from driving for 10 years yesterday.
He pleaded guilty to causing the death of 54-year old Mr Chin Kin Siong last Monday.
The night before the incident on 30th July, Rozario had slept in his lorry after drinking at a coffeeshop. He woke up at 5:00am and set off for home, but stopped his vehicle along PIE towards Changi Airport and fell asleep.
Another truck driver spotted the danger, stopped at the road shoulder nearby and tried to wake Rozario up. When he couldn't wake him up, he stood on the road shoulder and waved a torchlight to warn oncoming traffic of danger.
But Mr. Chin did not avoid the Rozario's lorry in time, and slammed into the back of it. He suffered multiple injuries and died in hospital a few hours later.
Rozario could have been jailed for up to five years and fined for rashly causing the death of other motorists.
