The DS E-Tense Performance prototype produces a claimed 805bhp from electric motors at both axles alongside a battery with an innovative chemistry.

DS Automobiles has unveiled a DS E-Tense Performance prototype.

The car is said to be conceived as a high-performance laboratory to accelerate the development of technology for the future of DS Automobiles design.

A digital expression surface takes the place of a grille on the DS E-Tense Performance
The DS E-Tense Performance prototype utilises a drivetrain developed from expertise gathered from the firm's participation in Formula E. It uses two electric motors, giving a combined power of 805bhp (335bhp at the front and 469bhp at the back). Peak torque meanwhile, stands at a claimed 8,000Nm at the wheels.

These motors are fed via a battery developed in partnership with TotalEnergies and its subsidiary Saft. Sporting an innovative chemistry and an immersive cooling system, the battery can withstand phases of acceleration and regeneration of up to 600kW.

This also means that the use of regenerative braking is sufficient to slow the DS E-Tense Performance prototype, and the car's brake discs and pads are there only as an additional safety measure.

The DS E-Tense Performance prototype is also said to be a sketch of the firm's future design language.

The car utilises only regenerative braking to slow donw, although brake discs and pads are still present as an additional safety measure
The car sports a front devoid of a grille, but instead gets an animated surface alongside up of 800 LEDs spanning across the width of the car. While in place of conventional head lights are two cameras.

The body also sports a beetle-effect interference colour that changes its perceived colour depending on the angle from which it is viewed, and offering up a striking contrast against the black bonnet.

Bucket seats and a Formula E steering wheel create a cabin ambiance devoted to high performance.

No performance data for the DS E-Tense Performance prototype are yet available, although DS states that these will be revealed once Jean-Eric Vergne, E-Tense ambassador, and Antonio Felix da Costa, both Formula E champions, take the wheel of the prototype to finalise its development and begin tests on the track and open roads.
