General Motors has announced that it has formally registered with the FIA as a Formula One power unit manufacturer starting in the 2028 season. The FIA has approved Andretti’s Expression of Interest application for Andretti Cadillac to race in the FIA Formula One World Championship in October 2023.
General Motors states that its development and testing of prototype technology for the sport is already underway, and that its development of a Formula One power unit will advance its expertise in areas including electrification, sustainable fuels, and high efficiency internal combustion engines, amongst others.
Cadillac has only recently developed its 5.5-litre V8 powertrain which saw use in the 2023 IMSA and WEC season and won Cadillac Racing secured a podium finish at the 24 Hours of Le Mans as well as top championship honours for the inaugural IMSA Grand Touring Prototype season.
The news comes after Audi also announced its intention to join Formula One come 2026 as a power unit supplier in August 2022.
